Beryllium hydride cannot be prepared directly by reaction with H_{2}. It is prepared by reacting with LiAlH_{4} . The reactions that take place are given below:

8LiH+Al_{2}Cl_{6} \rightarrow 2LiAlH_{4}+6LiCl

2BeCl_{2}+LiAlH_{4}\rightarrow 2BeH_{2}+LiCl+AlCl_{3}
