Step I-

Protonation of alcohol and formation of a carbocation.

H_{2}SO_{4} \rightarrow H^{+} + ^{-}OSO_{2}OH

CH_{3}- CH_{2} - O - H + H^{+} \rightarrow CH_{3} - CH_{2} - ^{+}OH2

CH_{3} - CH_{2} - ^{+}OH2 \rightarrow CH_{3}- ^{+}CH_2 + H_{2}O

Step II-

Attack of nucleophile

HO - SO_{2} - O^{-} + ^{+}CH_{2} - CH_{3} \rightarrow CH_{3} - CH_{2} - O - SO_{2}- OH
