The ambident nucleophiles are those nucleophiles that have two nucleophilic sites through which they can attack. For example, the nitrile ion can attack through both the nitrogen atom (which forms nitroalkanes) and the oxygen atom (which forms alkyl nitrites). Thus, it is an ambident nucleophile.
