The differences between autotrophic nutrition and heterotrophic nutrition are given below:
| Autotrophic Nutrition | Heterotrophic Nutrition |
| (i) Food is synthesized by the organism itself by using the energy from sunlight using simple molecules like H2O and CO2 through photosynthesis. | (i) The organism is dependent on other organisms for food as Heterotrophic organisms cannot prepare their food by themselves as autotrophs do. |
| (ii) A green pigment called chlorophyll is necessary as it entraps the energy from sunlight. | (ii) No such pigment is required in this mode of nutrition. |
