In a chemical reaction, a substance gets oxidised as well as reduced simultaneously, which is called disproportionation reaction. For examples-

  • 3CrO_{4}^{3-}(V)+8H^{+}\rightarrow 2CrO_{4}^{2-}(VI)+Cr^{3+}(III)+4H_{2}O
  • 3MnO_{4}^{2-}(VI)+4H^{+}\rightarrow 2MnO_{4}^{-}(VII)+MnO_{2}(IV)+2H_{2}O
