Ketal-
It is a cyclic compound, which is formed when a ketone reacts with the ethylene glycol in the presence of dry hydrochloric acid.
For example:
Ketals are organic compounds formed when a ketone reacts with two equivalents of alcohol (or a diol) in the presence of an acid catalyst. They are derivatives of ketones in which the carbonyl group (C=O) is replaced by two alkoxy groups (−OR) attached to the same carbon atom.
Here, the ketal is dimethyl ketal of acetone.
Ketals are important in organic synthesis as protecting groups for ketones, preventing unwanted reactions at the carbonyl site.
