Q: 4 What is the greenhouse effect?
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. It occurs when certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere, known as greenhouse gases ( carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, and nitrous oxide), trap heat from the Sun. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere, warming the Earth’s surface, which then emits heat in the form of infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases absorb and re-radiate this heat, preventing it from escaping back into space, thus maintaining the planet's temperature at levels suitable for life. However, human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, increase the concentration of these gases, leading to enhanced greenhouse effect, which causes global warming and climate change.
