When acid is mixed with water, their molecules dissociate to form ions. The H^{+} ions combine with H_{2}O to form H_{3}O^{+} ions.

HCl+H_{2}O\rightarrow H^{+}+Cl^{-}+H_{2}O

H_{2}O+H^{+}\rightarrow H_{3}O^{+}\left ( \text {Hydronium ion} \right )
