When water is added to an acid, their molecules dissociate to form ions.

HCl+H_{2}O\rightarrow H^{+}+Cl^{-}+H_{2}O

H_{2}O+H^{+}\rightarrow H_{3}O^{+}(Hydronium\; ion)

Mixing of an acid with water is called dilution, it results in the decrease in the concentration of ions, (H^{+},O^{-2} ) per unit volume.
