Why is FeO (s) not formed in stoichiometric composition?
Iron oxide (FeO) has rock salt structure.
In the crystals of FeO, ions adopt on sites.
FeO is always non-stoichiometric i.e., the composition of and ions is 0.95 : 1 instead of 1:1 .
This non stoichiometric composition can be obtained if a small number of ions are replaced by of ions in OH sites to maintain the positive charge.
