(a) A parallel plate capacitor (C_{1}) having charge Q is connected, to an identical uncharged capacitor C_{2} in series. What would be the charge accumulated on the capacitor C_{2} ?

(b) Three identical capacitors each of capacitors 3\mu F are connected in series and in parallel combination to the common source of V volt. Find out of the ratio of the energies stored in two configurations.

Answers (1)

(a) The charge accumulated on C2 = 0. since the circuit is incomplete.

(b) In series combination

    C_{s}=\frac{3\mu F}{3}=1\mu F

in parallel combination

C_{p}= 3\times 3 \mu F= 9\mu F

E_{s}= \frac{1}{2}C_{s}V^{2}

E_{p}= \frac{1}{2}C_{p}V^{2}

\frac{E_{s}}{E_{p}}= \frac{C_{s}}{C_{p}}=\frac{1}{9}

So the ratio is 1:9
