(a) Compare the charateristics of the following:
(i) Eurthermal and Stenothermal
(ii) Euryhaline and Stenohaline organisms
(b) How does our body get acclimatized to 'altitude sicknee' ?
(a) (i)
EURYTHERMAL ORGANISMS |
STENOTHERMAL ORGANISMS |
Organisms can tolerate and thrive in a wide range of temperatures. Examples- cat, dogs, monkeys etc. |
Organisms restricted to a narrow range of temperatures. Examples- Penguin, Crocodiles, python etc. |
(ii)
EURYHALINE ORGANISMS |
STENOHALINE ORGANISMS |
Organisms are tolerant to a wide range of salinities. Examples- the stingray, lamprey |
Organisms restricted to a narrow range of salinities. Examples- goldfish |
(b) In the low atmospheric pressure of high altitudes, the body does not get enough oxygen which results in altitude sickness. But, gradually we get acclimatized and stop experiencing altitude sickness as the body compensates low oxygen availability by increasing red blood cell production, decreasing the binding capacity of hemoglobin and increasing breathing rate.
