(i) Time of initation of process

Spermatogenesis Oogenesis
  • It starts in male at the age of puberty due to significant increase in the secretion of Gonadotrpin Releasing Hormone (GRH)
  • It is initaiated in females during the embryonic development stagewhen a couple of oogonia are formed within each fetal ovary. No more oogomia are formed or added after birth.

(ii) Site of Completion of the process

Spermatogenesis Oogenesis
  • It is completd in the testes and mature sperms are relased from the seminiferous tubules aand are transported by the accessory ducts.
  • It is completed in the female reproductive tract, in he ovary. The Graffian follicle ruptures to release the secondary oocyte from ovary ( ovulation). The secondary oocyte is converted to ovum (mature female gamete).

(iii) Nature of meiotic division undergone by the gamete mother cells

Spermatogenesis Oogenesis
  • It involves equal cytoplasmic division
  • It involves unequal cytoplasmic divisions.

(b) Spermatogenesis starts at the age of puberty due to significant increase in the secretion of gonadotrpn releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH is a hypothalamic hormone.

The increased levels of GnRH then act at the anterior pitutary gland and sytimulates seretion of two gonadotropins -

Luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

LH acts at the Leydig cells and stimulates synthesis and secretion of androgens. Androgens in turn stimulates process of spermatogeneisis.

FSH acts on the Sertoli cells and stimulates secretion of some factors which help in the process of Spermiogenesis.
