Diatoms are a large group of single- celled algae that are encased in a silica cell wall. Many kinds of planktonic, and extensive fossil deposits have been found.

Ex- (Bacillariophyceae) of minute planktonic unicellular or colonial algae with silicified skeletons that form diatom.
