The process of fusion of gametes taking place outside the body of the organisms is called external fertilization and it needs a medium (aquatic only).
This method is mainly found in aquatic animals like fishes, amphibians, and algae.
The disadvantages are that it can only happen in the water medium, the chance factor is involved, and the young ones are not protected from the predators.
