Differences observed in traits amongst individuals of a species is called variation. Due to variation, species can adjust itself to the changing environment in order to survive. For example, a variation of heat - resistance observed in bacteria will ensure bacterial survival even when the environmental temperature rises above the threshold. On the other hand, bacterias which don't have this variation to withstand heat would not be able to survive under these circumstances and die.
