Conventional sources of energy are used on a large scale for example coal, petroleum, hydroelectricity and natural gas have been in use for quite sometime. Water as a source of energy is more important than coal and petroleum because of the following reasons:
(i) Renewable resource
(ii) Pollution free          
(iii) Available in plenty      
(iv) Maintenance cost is less
(v) It can be transmitted through energy over long distances.
