Give reasons for the following:
(i) Aniline does not undergo Friedal - Crafts reaction.
(ii) is more basic than
in an aqueous solution.
(iii) Primary amines have higher boiling point than tertiary amines.
(i) Aniline doesn’t undergo Friedal-crafts reaction due to salt formation between aniline and catalyst Anhyd. AlCl3 (Lewis acid) as a result nitogen acquires positive charge and hence acts as a strong deactivating group for further reaction.
(ii) in aqueous solution is more basic than
becuase stability depends H-bonding; more the number of H-bonds, more is the extent of stability of conjugate acid.
(iii) Boiling point of primary amines is higher than tertiary amines because they are more associated to each other through H-bonding due to presence of 2N-H bonds whereas there is none in tertiary amines.
