What is hydroelectric power plant

Answers (1)

  • Hydroelectric power plants are used to generate electrical energy from water.
  • For this water, the water from the river are stored in a reservoir or dam.
  • The water in the dam possesses high potential energy.
  • This water is allowed to flow through a penstock.
  • This flowing water possesses a high amount of kinetic energy.
  • The water coming out of the penstock is allowed to pass through a narrow nozzle and to hit a turbine.
  • The high energy water hitting the turbine makes the turbine to rotate.
  • The turbine is attached to an ac generator via a shaft and the generator produced electricity.
  • The generated electricity is carried out to substations via transmission lines with high voltage. High voltage is obtained using step-up transformers.
  • From substations, the electricity is passed to local transformers which step-downs the voltage to a value required for domestic and industrial usage
