Where are the following structures present in male gametophyte of an angiosperm? Mention the fuction of each one of them.

(a) Gene pore - It is present in the exine of the pollen grain where sporopollenin is absent. Its function is that it serves as a site through which the gene tube or pollen tube emerges on germination.

(b) Sporopollenin - The hard outer larger exine of the pollen grain is made up of sporopollenin which is one of the most resistant material known. Its function is that it can withstand high temperatures and strong acid and alkali.

(c) Generative cell - It is found in the mature pollen grain. The generative cells are small and float in the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell.

The generative cell divides mitotically to give rise to two male gametes before pollen grains are shed (3-celled stage)
