Limestone provides the flux, C_{a}O which combines with an impurity SiO_{2} to form easily fusible CaSiO_{3} (slag). Thus, it helps in the removal of impurity i.e,SiO_{2}

CaCO_{3}\rightarrow CaO+CO_{2}

CaO+SiO_{2}\rightarrow CaSiO_{3}
