The potato would require emasculation since it has bisexual flowers and emasculation is the process of removal of anther from flower bud before the anther dehiscence.

However, both, papaya and potato can be used for the process of bagging. Bagging means the process of covering the stigma with a bag made of butter paper to prevent the contamination of its stigma with unwanted pollen.

If the female parent bears unisexual flowers there is no need for emasculation and the female flower buds are bagged before the flowers open and when the stigma becomes receptive pollination is carried out.
