Two main types of isomerism are known in the case of coordination compounds which can be further divided into subgroups:-

  (a) Stereoisomerism:-

        (i)  Geometrical isomerism   E.g

                                                              .

        (ii)  Optical isomerism

  (b)  Structural isomerism:-

          (i) Linkage isomerism           E.g \left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_5\left(\mathrm{NO}_2\right)\right] \mathrm{Cl}_2 \ and \ \left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_5(\mathrm{ONO})\right] \mathrm{Cl}_2

          (ii) Ionisation isomerism        E.g \left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_5 \mathrm{SO}_4\right] \mathrm{Br}\ and \ \left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_5 \mathrm{Br}\right] \mathrm{SO}_4

          (iii) Coordination isomerism  E.g \left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_6\right]\left[\mathrm{Cr}(\mathrm{CN})_6\right]\ and \ \left[\mathrm{Cr}\left(\mathrm{NH}_3\right)_6\right]\left[\mathrm{Co}(\mathrm{CN})_6\right]

          (iv) Solvate isomerism           E.g \left[\mathrm{Cr}\left(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}\right)_6\right] \mathrm{Cl}_3 \quad \ and \ \quad\left[\mathrm{Cr}\left(\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}\right)_5 \mathrm{Cl}\right] \mathrm{Cl}_2 \cdot \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}
