AX is a covalent diatomic molecule where A and X are second-row elements of the periodic table.

We know the of Bond Order:

\begin{aligned} &\text { Bond order }= &\frac{\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { bonding MO } \end{array}\right)-\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { antibonding MO } \end{array}\right)}{2} \end{aligned}\begin{aligned} &2.5= &\frac{\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { bonding MO } \end{array}\right)-\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { antibonding MO } \end{array}\right)}{2} \end{aligned}\begin{aligned} & 5= &\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { bonding MO } \end{array}\right)-\left(\begin{array}{c} \text { No. of electron in } \\ \text { antibonding MO } \end{array}\right) \end{aligned}

So, the combination can be

5 = 5 - 0 or 6 - 1

Maximum 6 electrons are possible in bonding MO.

So, possible molecule

CN (13 electrons) or NO (15  electrons)

But C is not a diatomic molecule.

So, The molecule is NO.

Total no. of electrons is 15.

Ans = 15
