Effect of Pressure

  • High pressure is favourable for the reaction in which there is a decrease in volume or nr > np.

  • Low pressure is favourable for the reaction in which there is an increase in volume or nr < np.

  • Pressure is kept constant when the volume is constant or nr = np.

Here

nr = moles of gaseous reactant

np = moles of gaseous product

 

In the reaction  N_2 O_4 \rightleftharpoons 2NO_2 on the reactant side, only one species is present and on the product side, no. of species that are produced is 2.

As the system is compressed to the equilibrium again the reaction will proceed in the backward direction 

Therefore, option number (1) is correct.
