Roasting is the process in which concentrated ore is heated to high temperatures in presence of excess of air. It will convert sulphides to metal oxides and \mathrm{SO_{2}} and remove arsenic and sulphur impurities and water of hydration. Eg

\begin{aligned} & 2 \mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{~S}(\mathrm{~s})+3 \mathrm{O}_2+\text { Heat } \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{s})+2 \mathrm{SO}_2(\mathrm{~g}) \\ \\& 2 \mathrm{ZnS}(\mathrm{s})+3 \mathrm{O}_2+\text { Heat } \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{ZnO}(\mathrm{s})+2 \mathrm{SO}_2(\mathrm{~g}) \\ \\& 2 \mathrm{PbS}(\mathrm{s})+3 \mathrm{O}_2+\text { Heat } \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{PbO}(\mathrm{s})+2 \mathrm{SO}_2(\mathrm{~g}) \end{aligned}
