The Hall-Heroult process is widely used in the extraction of aluminium by electrolysis. In Hall-Heroults process, pure \mathrm{Al_{2}O_{3}} is mixed with \mathrm{CaF_{2} \; or\; Na_{3}AlF_{6}}. It results in lowering the melting point of the mixture and increases its ability to conduct electricity.

The overall reaction is : \mathrm{2 \mathrm{Al}_2 \mathrm{O}_3+3 \mathrm{C} \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{Al}+3 \mathrm{CO}_2}

The electrolytic reactions are :

At the cathode : \mathrm{Al}^{3+}+3 \mathrm{e}^{-} \rightarrow \mathrm{Al}(\mathrm{l})

At the anode :

\begin{aligned} & \mathrm{C}(\mathrm{s})+\mathrm{O}^{2-} \rightarrow \mathrm{CO}(\mathrm{g})+2 \mathrm{e}^{-} \\ & \mathrm{C}(\mathrm{s})+2 \mathrm{O}^{2-} \rightarrow \mathrm{CO}_2(\mathrm{~g})+4 \mathrm{e}^{-} \end{aligned}
