Shylock is the most prominent character in the play. He is a Jew who lends money to other and charged high rate of interest. Though Shylock is a villian of the play, he draws the attention of the readers. 

Shylock is suspicious by nature. He has no faith in his own daughter. He does not believe his servant to Launcelot. Both Jessica and Launcelot leave his house. He is greedy of money.

Shylock is a typical Jew. He does not like Christians because they ill-behave him, He is cruel by nature. When Antonio fails to pay three thousand ducats, he demands one pound of flesh from his body according to the bond. 

Shylock has great intellectual power. He argues his case forcefully in the court of the Duke of Venice.
