(a) esterfication reaction :

When an organic acid reacts with an alcohol in the presence of acid catalyst, it produces a sweet smelling substance called ester.

esterfication reaction :

CH_{3}COOH+C_{2}H_{5}OH\rightarrow CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}+H_{2}O

Saponification :

ester reacts in the present of an acid or a base to give back the alcohol and the carboxylic acid this reaction is known as saponification because it is used in the preparation of soap.

CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}\rightarrow CH_{3}COOH+C_{2}H_{5}OH

(b)

CH_{3}-COOH+CH_{3}CH_{2}OH\rightarrow CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}+H_{2}O
