(a) For the same angle of incidence of 45^{\circ}, the refraction angle in two transparent media P and Q is 20^{\circ} and 30^{\circ}respectively. Which of the two is optically denser and why ?

(b) Define 1 dioptre power of a lens.

Answers (1)

(a) Out of the two given cases, P is optically denser as the angle of refraction is less, which is 20o. Therefore it will bend more towards the normal ray.


b) One dioptre is defined as the power of a lens whose focal length is 1 metre. (P= 1/F)


c) Given,  P = 0.5 D 

Therefore    1/F=0.5 D or 1/0.5 =F (2m=F)
