(a)  Metals high up in reactivity series cannot be obtained from their compounds by heating with carbon as carbon can not reduce the oxides of these elements while those in the middle of the reactivity series are extracted first by converting their sulphides or carbonates into oxides and then reducing by Carbon

  •  Same process cannot be applied for them because these metals have high affinity for oxygen than Carbon .
  • Process of extraction of sodium is Electrolytic reduction
  • Sodium is obtained from its molten chloride by passing electricity.
  • at Cathode : Na+ + e- ----> Na and
  • at Anode : 2Cl----> Cl2+ 2e-
