(a) How will you infer with the help of an experiment that the same current flows through every part of a circuit containing three resistors in series connected to a battery ?

(b) Consider the given circuit and find the current flowing in the circuit and potential difference across the 15\Omega resistor when the circuit is closed.

(a)

  • Join three resistors of different values (R_1, R_2 and R_3) in series .
  • Connect them with the battery, an ammeter and plug key.
  • Change position of ammeter to anywhere in between the resistor and note the reading of ammeter each time.
  • The ammeter reading will remain same everytime. Therefore the same current flows through every part of the circuit containing three resistors in the series.

(b) Total resistance of the circuit =

R = R_{1}+R_{2}+R_{3}

R = 5+10 +15= 30cm

Potential difference across the circuit

V = IR or I = \frac{V}{R}

I = \frac{30V}{30\Omega} = 1A

Potential difference across 15 ohm resister = IR

                                                                        1\times 15 = 15 volt
