(a) List two reasons in favour of Mendel’s choice of pea plants for his experiments.
(b) ‘‘The geographical isolation of individuals of a species can lead to the formation of a new species.’’ Provide a suitable explanation to justify this statement.
(a) Mendel selected pea plant for his experiments because of the following characteristics-
(i) Very easy to grow and cultivate
(ii) They have a short life - cycle
(iii) They are easily self - pollinated and cross-pollinated and produces many offspring in one cross.
(iv) They have good resistance to disease.
(v) They have a large number of contrasting characters.
(b) Yes, the geographical isolation of individuals of a species can lead to the formation of a new species. This may limit the sexual reproduction of a separate population. Slowly separated individuals reproducing among themselves and this leads to the generation of new variations. continuous accumulation and transfer of these variations through a few generations may lead to the formation of new species.
