(a) Mendel selected pea plant for his experiments because of the following characteristics-

(i) Very easy to grow and cultivate

(ii) They have a short life - cycle

(iii) They are easily self - pollinated and cross-pollinated and produces many offspring in one cross.

(iv) They have good resistance to disease.

(v) They have a large number of contrasting characters.

 

(b) Yes, the geographical isolation of individuals of a species can lead to the formation of a new species. This may limit the sexual reproduction of a separate population. Slowly separated individuals reproducing among themselves and this leads to the generation of new variations. continuous accumulation and transfer of these variations through a few generations may lead to the formation of new species.
