(a) State with reason the consequence of decrease in number of carnivores in an ecosystem.
(b) In a food chain, state the trophic level at which the concentration of harmful chemicals is maximum. Why is it so?
a) If the share of carnivores were to reduce in the ecosystem, then the herbivores would increase in number and this will lead to a reduction in plant species as there would be more herbivores to eat them and thus it would create a huge disorder and disturb the balance of the ecosystem.
b) The chemical fertilizers, pesticides which are absorbed by the plants from the soil and enter the food chain and they accumulate progressively at each trophic level. As we know that human occupy the top level of any food chain, that's why the maximum concentration of chemicals is found in our bodies.
