Esterfication reaction :

When an organic acid reacts with an alcohal in the presence of acid catalyst , it produces a sweet smelling substance called ester.

CH_{3}COOH+C_{2}H_{5}OH\rightarrow CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}+H_{2}O

Use : It is used in perfume.

Sapanofication : ester reacts in the presence of an acid or base to give back the alcohol and the carboxylic acid, this reaction is known as saponification.

Use : It is used in the preparation of the soap.

CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}\rightarrow CH_{3}COOH+C_{2}H_{5}OH
