The young man here is a boy of a family who was the youngest among all his brothers and sisters. The family had a dog named Attila who do nothing except for eating and strolling outside in open. When the mother of the child pointed that the dog eats too much and doesn't bark at people or thieves. The young man defended the dog by saying that the dog watches the house every night. He stays awake and prowls at night. Although, he doesn't bark at other people. Even though, the dog used to do his bit to save the house, still the mother did not liked the dog much and thinks the dog might invite more trouble than benefits. This suspicion that young boy's mother have regarding the dog was explained by young man as the most uncharitable cynicism.
