When 5% alkaline potassium permagnetic solution is added drop by drop to propanol taken in the test tube, then its purple colour disappears as it oxidizes the propanol to its respective carboxylic acid.

CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}OH\overset{alk.KMnO_{4}}{\rightarrow}CH_{3}CH_{2}COOH
