It is a series of carbon compound which can be represented by same general formula with a same functional group and having same chemical properties. In series each successive member differ by CH2

For example - 

Methane        CH_{4}

Ethane          CH_{3}CH_{3}                                                Alkalne series

Propane         CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{3}

Butane             CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{3}

General formula - C_{n}H_{2n+2}

Characteristics of homologous series : -

  1. each member of the series can be represented by the same general formula. Eg. In alkane series, general formula is C_{n}H_{2n+2}.
  2. They have similar chemical properties 
  3. Physical properties of series changes throughout in a regular way.
  4. All the member of a series can be prepared almost by the identical methods.
