Ozone is a highly reactive gas made up of three oxygen atoms.

It is an inorganic molecule and its chemical formula is O3.

The ozone layer is continuously formed at the higher level of the atmosphere because of the action of UV radiations on oxygen molecule O2 into free oxygen (O) atoms.

        O_{2}\overset{UV}{\rightarrow}\dot{O}+\dot{O}

Then, this free oxygen atoms combine with the molecular oxygen to form ozone.

        O_{2}+O\rightarrow O_{3}(ozone)

Damage in the ozone layer allows the harmful UV rays to reach the earth surface. and UV rays can cause -

(i) Increase in the global warming rate leads to melting of ice caps.

(ii) Skin cancer, ageing in human beings.

(iii) Death of phytoplankton which cause an increase in the global warming rate.
