Why does absorption of digested food occur mainly in the small intestine?

There are few reasons why most of the digestion of food occurs in the small intestine: 

  • Digestion is completed in the small intestine. 
  • Villi which increases the surface area for absorption is present in the inner lining of the small intestine.
  • The Wall of the intestine has a rich supply of blood vessels that transports the absorbed food to each cell of the body.
