Explain, how is the electronegativity of carbon atoms related to their state of hybridisation in an organic compound?
Electronegativity of carbon is directly proportional to the ‘s’ character. If C is hybridised then V character is 25%, hybridised then V character is 33% and if sp hybridised then V character is 50%. Hence, sp hybridised carbon has strong hybridisation, s electrons are more strongly attracted by nucleus than p-electrons thus electronegativity of carbon increases with increase in ‘s’ character.
