Explain why is OH group in phenols is more strongly held as compared to OH group in alcohols.

Answers (1)

Even though both alcohol and phenol groups contain -OH group, the bond strength is much higher in phenols as compared to alcohols due to the direct attachment of -OH group to a sp^{2} hybridised carbon in phenol. The bond size is relatively smaller, and because of resonance & charge distribution, it acquires a partial double bond character in phenolic compounds.
