B has smaller first ionization enthalpy than Be. Consider the following statements :

(I) It is easier to remove 2p electron than 2s electron.

(II) 2p electron of B is more shielded from the nucleus by the inner core of electrons than the 2s electrons of Be.

(III) 2s electron has more penetration power than 2p electron

(IV) atomic radius of B is more than Be

(atomic number B = 5, Be = 4)

The correct statements are :

Option: 1

I, II and III

Option: 2

II , III and IV

Option: 3

I, III and IV

Option: 4

I, II and IV

Screening effect: The higher is the value of the screening effect, the lower is the ionisation enthalpy. As the screening effect increases, the repulsion between the electrons increases and thus the removal of an electron from the atom becomes easier. Thus,

Ionisation enthalpy ∝ 1/Screening effect

(i) It is easier to extract an electron from 2p orbital than 2s orbital
(ii) Penetration power of 2s orbital is greater than 2p orbital
(iii) There is Shielding of 2p electron by 2s electron

Hence, the option number (1) is correct.
