Homoleptic octahedral complexes of a metal ion ' M^{3+}' with three monodentate ligands L_{1},L_{2}\: and L_{3} absorb wavelengths in the region of green , blue and red respectively . The increasing order of the ligand strength is :

  • Option 1)

    L_{1}<L_{2}<L_{3}

  • Option 2)

    L_{3}<L_{2}<L_{1}

  • Option 3)

    L_{3}<L_{1}<L_{2}

  • Option 4)

    L_{2}<L_{1}<L_{3}

CFSE in octahedral complex -

CFSE =\left [- \frac{2}{5}\left ( No. of\;electron\;in\;t_{2}g \right ) +\frac{3}{5}\left ( No. of\;\acute{e}s\;in\;eg \right ) \right ]\bigtriangleup \circ

-

We know, \Delta _{0}\alpha \frac{1}{\lambda _{abs}}

Order of  {\lambda _{abs}}\rightarrow L_{3}>L_{1}>L_{2}

So, \Delta _{0} drder will be L_{2}>L_{1}>L_{3}

Colour in coordination compounds -

The colour of the complex is complimentary to that which is absorbed

-

Option 1)

L_{1}<L_{2}<L_{3}

Option 2)

L_{3}<L_{2}<L_{1}

Option 3)

L_{3}<L_{1}<L_{2}

Option 4)

L_{2}<L_{1}<L_{3}
