Rules for Oxidation Number -

The algebraic sum of the oxidation number of all the atoms in a compound must be zero. In polyatomic ion the sum is equal to charge on the ion.

-

Sum of oxidation number =charge on the ion.

 In \ po_{4}^{3^{-}}: x+4 \times (-2)=-3 \Rightarrow x=5

In \ So_{4}^{2^{-}}: x+4 \times (-3)=-2 \Rightarrow x=6

In \ Cr_{2}O 7^{2^{-}}: 2x+7 \times (-2)=-2 \Rightarrow x=6
