A body of mass (4m) is laying in x-y plane at rest. It suddenly explodes into three pieces. Two pieces, each of mass (m) move perpendicular to each other with equal speeds (\nu). The total kinetic energy generated due to explosion is:

  • Option 1)

    m\nu2

  • Option 2)

  • Option 3)

    2 m\nu2

  • Option 4)

    4 m\nu2

As we discussed in concept @7029

By conservation of linear momentum

2mv_1=\sqrt{2}mv \Rightarrow v_1=\frac{v}{\sqrt{2}}

As two masses of each of mass m move perpendicular to each other.

Total K.E generated ==\frac{1}{2}mv^2 + \frac{1}{2}mv^2 +\frac{1}{2}(2m)v_1^2

=mv^2 + \frac{1}{2}mv^2 =\frac{3}{2}mv^2

Option 1)

m\nu2

Incorrect

Option 2)

Correct

Option 3)

2 m\nu2

Incorrect

Option 4)

4 m\nu2

Incorrect
