Which of the following sets of characteristics leads to the increase in solubility of ionic substances?

Option: 1

High dipole moment, strong attraction by an ion and high solvation energy.

Option: 2

High dipole moment, strong attraction by an ion and low solvation energy.

Option: 3

High dipole moment, weak attraction by an ion and large solvation energy.

Option: 4

Low dipole moment, weak attraction by an ion and high solvation energy.

Answers (1)

As we have learnt,
We can measure molecular dipole moments by measuring the dielectric constant of a material. Materials with large dipoles have high dielectric constants. It means higher the dielectric constant of a solvent, the more polar it is. Therefore ionic substances having high dipole moments means they are highly polar and are strongly attracted by an ion and hence have high solvation.
Option number (1) is correct.
