Chloramphenicol, isolated in 1947, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hence can be given orally in case of typhoid, dysentery, acute fever, a certain form of urinary infections, meningitis and pneumonia.
