Bottles containing C_6H_5I  and C_6H_5CH_2I  lost their original labels. They were labelled A and B for testing. A and B  were separately taken in a test tube and boiled with NaOH solution. The end solution in each tube was made acidic with dilute HNO_3 and then some  AgNO_3 solution was added. Substance B gave a yellow precipitate. Which one of the following statements is true for this experiment?

Option: 1

A was C_6H_5I

Option: 2

A was C_6H_5CH_2I

Option: 3

B was C_6H_5I

Option: 4

Addition of HNO_3  was unnecessary.

As we have learnt,

Benzyl halides undergo nuclephilic substitution reaction easily while Phenyl halide does not. For Phenyl halide to give the reaction, high temperature and pressure conditions are required (623 K , 300 atm).

Thus, the benzyl halide undergoes substitution with \mathrm{NaOH} forming a Benzyl alcohol while the Iodide ion comes into the solution in the form of \mathrm{NaI} which gives a yellow precipitate upon addition of \mathrm{AgNO_3}

Hence, the correct answer is Option (1)
