Explain the role of hormones in digestion.
Important in digestion control, hormones control the release of gastrointestinal motility, digestive enzymes, and gastric fluids. The pancreas secretes bicarbonate to balance the acid generated by the stomach, so breaking down food; the hormone gastrin increases the production of stomach acid. Cholecystokinin (CCK) stimulates the gallbladder to secrete bile and the pancreas to secrete digestive enzymes, therefore helping the lipids and proteins to be digested more easily. Ghrelin ("Hunger Hormone") drives hunger, and peptide YY and leptin indicate fullness to help regulate food intake. These hormones control correct digestion, nutrient absorption, and control of hunger.
